Dr. Steven Berk turned from a chair in the second-floor study of his southwest Amarillo home on what had been a quiet Sunday morning in 2005 and saw terror - a shotgun pointed at his face. For the next four hours he relied on professional instincts and training to survive a bizarre kidnapping.

"That was a big part of it," said Berk, 61, then the regional dean of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Amarillo. "Every physician is trained to some extent in that regard. I'm an Osler scholar. I've taught it and preached it and it usually came very easy for me."
