Brian D. Schroeder, M.D., has been named the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (�㽶ֱ��) School of Medicine regional dean in the Permian Basin, effective May 1. Schroeder has served as the interim Jan & Ted Roden Endowed Chair and regional dean since May 2025.

Since stepping into the role in the Permian Basin, Schroeder has strengthened the school’s focus on people, programs and facilities, said John C. DeToledo, M.D., School of Medicine dean and executive vice president for clinical affairs.

“Dr. Schroeder has supported faculty recruitment, improved clinical training spaces and helped grow programs that meet the needs of our communities,” DeToledo said. “I’m grateful to have Dr. Schroeder continue in his leadership role in the Permian Basin.”

Schroeder has been with �㽶ֱ�� since 2019, beginning as an associate professor and later serving as associate dean of faculty development and recruitment. He retired from the U.S. Air Force Reserve at the rank of colonel after a career as a flight surgeon, where he cared for fighter and bomber squadrons. Most recently, he served as assistant to the surgeon general of the Air Force Reserve. Schroeder also holds a weekly Aviation Medicine Clinic, serving pilots and air traffic controllers. 

“I’m blessed to take on this unique challenge issued from the Board of Regents and �㽶ֱ�� President Lori Rice-Spearman to continue expanding healthcare access in the Permian Basin,” Schroeder said. “I look forward to strengthening �㽶ֱ�� Permian Basin’s existing community partnerships and using those collaborations to help execute our vision for bringing care to our area.”

After earning an associate of arts degree in Nursing from the University of South Dakota, Schroeder went on to receive both a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Texas Medical Branch. He completed an internal medicine residency at Michigan State University-Kalamazoo Center for Medical Studies and earned a Master of Business Administration from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan.

Schroeder is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American Association for Physician Leadership. He is also a Certified Physician Executive. He and his team recently received the 2026 �㽶ֱ�� University Team Award. He also received the inaugural “Lieutenant Colonel Leon Vance Leadership Award” for Outstanding Airman of the Year for the 489th Bomb Group at Dyess Air Force Base in February 2019.

The �㽶ֱ�� Permian Basin School of Medicine is home to residencies in internal medicine, family and community medicine and obstetrics and gynecology, as well as clinical rotations and patient care in general surgery, psychiatry and pediatrics. The school provides medical education to third- and fourth-year medical students in all six core specialties: family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, psychiatry and surgery.
